Tier Rankings #22 – Guillermo Del Toro films

Creature features have been a pivotal part of cinema and our progressive ideals since the Dawn of cinematic achievement. Bringing together morals and idealism in the most visually absurdist way, they give us a vantage point into all that is different, challenging us to be and do better in ways that make us as extraordinary as the character designs that push technical limitations. Guillermo Del Toro is one of few directors left with such an agenda, carving out no shortage of thematically complex material through the eyes of those society deems as different, all the while pushing the envelope with extraordinary computer generation to make what we’re seeing all the more believable. 1. Wow, I had no idea Guillermo Del Toro had such a sizeable resume. I’ve never heard of Cronos, The Devils Backbone, or Mimic. Plus I honestly didn’t know that he directed Blade 2. It’s fascinating to watch him grow as a director. From the comic book like thrills of the Hellboy movies to the monster destruction of Pacific Rim to the much more intimate beauty of The Shape of Water. All these movies are so different yet share a certain creature like flair to them which I love. I can’t wait to see where he goes next! Great ranking!
